Why being a swimming teacher is the best job in the world!
Have you ever thought about becoming a swimming teacher? Helen Bull, our National Commercial Aquatics Manager is here to tell you why being a swimming teacher is “the best job in the world”.
Swimming teachers are in demand!
Since restrictions eased following the pandemic, the demand for our product – especially swimming lessons – has been huge. It is encouraging to see so many parents wanting their children to learn the life skill of swimming.
What people may not realise though is that we now need lots of additional swimming teachers in order for us to deliver so many swimming lessons. And really good swimming teachers can be hard to find.
At the More Swimming Academy, we pride ourselves on making sure our swimming teachers are the best of the best. Working for the More Swimming Academy is so much more than just having a job. We live by our values of trust, care, innovation and pride.
It is important to us that our people are happy, supported and have every opportunity to gain additional qualifications.
And so, this is the inspiration behind this month’s blog.
My swimming teacher journey
I have been a qualified swimming teacher since my teenage years (a long time ago!). I am very lucky that I now get to look after all our swimming teachers at Serco Leisure. But I’ll let you into a secret – I jump at the chance to teach whenever I can! I get incredibly excited when I get to teach – there is no feeling like it.
In my view, swim teaching is one of the best jobs in the world. There are not many jobs where you can teach someone a life skill that could one day save their life or the life of someone else.
I learnt to swim very late compared to many. I was 11 years old, and to this day I still remember the lady who taught me. She was so kind and caring. Just thinking about her makes me smile. That swim teacher had a massive impact on my life.
Because of her, I fell in love with the water and went on to swim at a national level.
Swim teaching is a job that is perfect for so many people – parents, students, those returning to work after a break and those who want a career in leisure are just some examples. The hours are varied. We have lessons from early in the morning, through the day and then into the evenings – seven days a week at some of our sites. Whatever time of day you would like to work, I guarantee there’s a swim teacher shift perfect for you. It is one of the most inclusive jobs out there.
People often think you need to be a good swimmer to be a swim teacher. This is not the case. Anyone can learn the technical stuff by doing the qualifications, but actually some of the best swim teachers are the ones who are great with people. It’s about being able to show that you care and being able to have fun.
Working as a swimming teacher really is a unique job – it is rewarding and magical in equal measures. No two days are the same.
